Seasonal Travel Trends 2019 | Ski and Beach Hotel Destinations

It’s December once again, which means long winter nights as temperatures plunge in the Northern Hemisphere, and warm summer days under the hot sun in the Southern Hemisphere.

These seasons present distinct travel trends which hoteliers can take advantage of. The otherwise low season of the northern winter is punctuated by bustling ski and snow destinations. In southern lands the summer peak season brings masses of sun-loving tourists to where the sea meets the sand.

To explore these seasonal travel trends, we have analyzed the top ski destinations in Europe and North America, and the top beach destinations in South America and Oceania. Based on hotel search behavior on trivago we reveal where travelers are headed, and the average prices they pay per night, and how long they plan to stay.

The data behind the trends

trivago’s seasonal trends are based on data generated by travelers searching for hotels from December 1, 2017 through October 22, 2018 for travel dates between December 1, 2018 and February 28, 2019, in selected countries.

Top destinations are determined by number of click-outs (when a traveler clicks on a hotel rate on trivago and is taken to the booking site to complete their reservation), and the share of click-outs in this season compared to the rest of the year.

Average prices are based on room prices (per night) clicked on by travelers on trivago. All prices are shown in euros for comparability.
